Life with Sofia!
Never again will I be able to leave the house empty-handed- at least not when my baby is along, is what the book, What to Expect During the First Year, tells me. And you know what? It doesn’t sound half bad... In fact, it sounds oddly comforting.
Sofia joined us January 7th, 2012 at 3:31 p.m.Today marks her 1 month birthday [as well as the end to my procrastination in updating the blog]. Her due date was January 10th but due to a variety of different factors, I was induced a bit early. The induction went great! All in all, it took 24 hours and 1 minute :) A few hours after I received the Pitocin, I caved for an epidural and enjoyed a couple hours of bliss, in which I slept. Unfortunately the epidural eventually wore off and even the anesthesiologist couldn’t fix the pain that had returned. All for the best because the contractions were the best motivation to push the source of pain out of me! I progressed really fast and was only in active labor for an hour and a half. And let me just say, 30 minutes of that was me holding Sofia in because the on-call [retarded] OB underestimated my pushing ability and was nowhere to be found! Thankfully, he showed up and Sofia came and all was well :)
Sofia is such an amazing baby- don’t all of us [moms] say that about our kids? ;) No, but really, my daughter is amazing... hehehe. Ever since she was born, everyone who has met Sofia has commented on how much older she appears because of how aware or alert she is. I hope she doesn’t continue this “growing up too fast” cycle when she is a teenager! At her last doctor appointment, the doctor even said Sofia’s looks are deceiving and that she needs to remember that she is only a few weeks old. Her eye contact is amazing and it is getting longer every day. She also smiles here and there- usually when I’m singing her “Old McDonald had a Farm”, she loves the “E-I-E-I-O” part :) She also loves kisses and it’s a good thing too because we like to give her tons! The other day she laughed for the first time. Okay, well it was kinda in her sleep, but it still counts, right? Sofia is also an amazing nurser! She has a great appetite and has been gaining weight like crazy! She is already over 9 lbs :) If she could have it her way, she would nurse 24/7- thank goodness I’m in charge!
Sofia is living up in many ways to what we speculated about her personality when I was carrying her. She is a princess. She knows what she wants and by god, if you don’t indulge her, she will have something to say about it! She prefers to be held ALL THE TIME- including all night :) She also likes to get a nice evening nap, so she’ll have enough energy to party all night, and then she likes to sleep in after all the partying is done. When she is sleeping, she is impenetrable. I remember the U/S tech would use a buzzer on my belly to get her to move during ultrasounds and Sofia had finessed the silent treatment even back then. The only way to really get her up is to have her daddy put his cold hands on her belly. But we don’t like to do that to often ;)
So what have I learned in the past 4 weeks?
- When I became a mother, I gave up personal hygiene. Don’t worry, I’m trying to get it back though ;)
- I’m learning to make good use of my time while she is sleeping (if I can get her in the swing without her waking).
- I am finally learning to multi-task!!! I still struggle with it but am getting better every day :)
Keith says that he’s learned that it’s okay if you get a little poop on your finger, just wipe it off. Lol. Considering his attitude towards diapers before Sofia was born, this is a huge improvement! Keith is actually pretty amazing when it comes to changing diapers. I get so cranky during middle-of-the-night feedings that I always tell him he has to change her diaper (if I can’t sleep, neither can he!) and he never complains :)
I am just so incredibly happy to have Sofia. I still can’t believe I have a daughter... Daughter. Daughter...I can’t believe I have that word! I’m still trying to get used to saying it. Every time I do, I get butterflies in my tummy. I love her so much. The way she is in the morning always makes up for all the tough nights. I love to cuddle with her and just enjoy watching her grow and learn. She loves to look at her crib mobile. We place her in the crib about three times a day and she will follow the movements so intently. She gets so excited too and has started making little “ah” and “bah” sounds! I just love to stare at her...
Anyways, stay tuned for next time when I will undoubtedly have many more Sofia developments to share with you all :)
